GREGG

Robert Edmond Gregg of 762 Eight St., Boulder, died
Friday, Jan. 29, at his home. He was 80.

Born April 19, 1912, in Chicago, he was the son of
Robert Scott Gregg and Florence May Hutton Gregg. On
Aug. 28, 1939, he married Ella Virginia Miller in Chicago.

Mr. Gregg came to Boulder in 1944 from Duluth, Minn.,
where was a professor of biology at State Teachers College.

He earned his B.S. and Ph.D. Degrees in zoology from
the University of Chicago where he was elected to Phi Beta
Kappa.

In Boulder, Mr. Gregg began teaching at the University
of Colorado, where he gained a full professorship in the
Department of Biology in 1959. He retired from CU in 1977.

A member of the Entomological Society of America and
several other entomological societies, he specialized in
the collection, classification, ecology and distribution
of ants. He published about 50 research papers and wrote
a book, "Ants of Colorado."

He won honors from the Scientific Research Society
of America, the American Society of Zoologists and the
American Association for Advancement of Science.

He and his wife spent more than 40 years building one
of the major collections of North American ants.

Mr. Gregg, who enjoyed travel, drawing, photography
and gardening, was also a member of the Wilderness
Society, the Nature Conservancy and the National
Geographic Society.

He was a Protestant.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Beatrice M. Gregg
of Edmonds, Wash.; a nephew, Donald Gregg of Spokane,
Wash.; and a niece, Betty Gregg Bates of Seattle, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his brother,
Belldon H. Gregg.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at
Howe Mortuary, 2121 11th St. in Boulder.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the
Howe Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Kayrene B. Pearson
of Community United Church of Christ officiating.

Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid
City, S.D.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to
the American Cancer Society.
